The Metaphor

When we think of different things, pictures come to our mind. We have a pre-existing identity of things and experiences in our minds, which is known as a Metaphor. When using a Metaphor make certain the comparison fits.

Web Development Phases

The first thing you must do is determine the objectives for the site you are creating and how you will go about accomplishing those objectives. Vision statements should contain values and goals for your upcoming Web site. The objectives will be your vision and you must determine the strategy you will use to accomplish these objectives. This process is known as conceptualization.

The second phase is preparing how transactions will be done, how users will navigate throughout your site and the order or hierarchy of the content on your site. This process is known as design visualization.

The look and feel of your site will be determined based on what users need from your site. The functionality of the site will be built based upon what you determine that customers need to obtain from your site. Once this has been determined you can then begin to build the functionality required to fulfill the needs of your customers. This approach is called the "bottom-up approach."

In a project analysis you will determine who you need on your team to accomplish the desired goal and value.

Three Generations of Web Sites

* First Generation - Basic
* Second Generation - Probably some level of interactivity
* Third Generation - More multimedia; more opportunity for interaction

Audiences Design with the end-user in mind. Who will view your site?

* Internet - World wide web network
* Intranet - Internal audience
* Extranet - Customer access

Audience may be non-technical. A non-technical audience will more than likely be made up of users that do not upgrade their browser frequently. They also may have slower systems, making them more likely to have slower-loading images.
