Determining Site Implementation Factors

When you go to a site to make a purchase, such as that of a computer, clothing, etc., or when you use a Web site to sell your goods, you are engaged in e-commerce. E-commerce is an electronic method of doing business.

A Web site characteristic that is required for a successful e-commerce Web site is interactivity. Since the purpose of an e-commerce site is to move the customer towards making a purchase, interactivity is the characteristic that keeps the user interested and moves them towards making a purchase. An example of interactivity is providing a shopping cart that holds the customers' potential purchases.

Another crucial characteristic of an e-commerce site is navigation. Navigation must be easy and intuitive so that customer's can make selections and then purchases. If navigation is not easy, the site will risk losing business.

Personalization is also a useful characteristic of an e-commerce site. For Julia's Web site, personalization could be showing a customer a list of product offerings based on their preferences.

Other characteristics of a successful e-commerce site are Web presence, permission marketing, and participating in a Web community.

When designing a Web site you should design according to what is termed as the "lowest common denominator." This simply means that not all who visit your site will have the latest technology, and if you have built your site on the premise that they do then you will minimize the number of users who can use your site. Do not use technology (like multimedia) just because you can. It must have a purpose.
